Site of PHILIP ASTLEY’s hercules house

Hercules Road in Lambeth was named after Hercules Hall that was built here in 1788 by Philip Astley, the founder of modern circus. Astley was a young war hero and started doing tricks on horse back in a field in Lambeth- there is a plaque on Cornwall Road in Waterloo near the spot. He opened Astley's Amphitheatre in 1773 near the Southern end of Westminster Bridge- considered the first modern circus ring.

He built Hercules Hall after years of success and travelling the world with his circus. It was named after one of his most famous horse-back tricks representing the Labours of Hercules.
